When Attorneys Benefit from the Support of a Divorce Coach

  • Attorney's resources and time may be diminished when they find themselves spending more time responding to their clients' emotional needs than to the legal process.  This slows down the settlement process, with the end result that clients may feel that their needs are not being met and dissatisfaction with the escalating costs of the process.
  • Some clients may need the support of a mental health professional.  Clients may also have an undiagnosed mental illness that puts their emotional stability at additional risk and simultaneously jeopardizes a satisfactory settlement outcome.
  • In high conflict cases, anger, fear and stress can impede the clarity of client communications.
  • In divorce cases there are co-parenting issues and questions about the future well-being and stability of the children.

The divorce coach frees up the attorney to focus on and put her/his energy into the legal process instead of trying to serve both as legal counsel and therapist.

The coach/mental health professional is trained to address the emotional issues that are central to divorce and other contentious litigation processes. A coach educates and supports clients to manage their reactivity. The client is then better able to communicate in constructive ways that can lead to a solution-focused settlement desired by both the client and the attorney.

With the coach's help, clients can learn effective communication skills, how to manage their reactivity and to advocate for themselves. They can also save money by using a professional who has expertise in addressing the emotional issues engendered by the divorce or legal process.

The divorce coach can work with the clients on co-parenting concerns and develop a parenting plan.
