Divorce Coaching and Family Law

Collaborative family law came into existence about 15 years ago and is being rapidly embraced by couples who have made the decision to divorce, who want to make necessary and wise decisions over parenting, support and division of family property without going through litigation. The beauty of the collaborative process is that couples are able to create settlements together that they agree are “fair” and that honor the best interests of all family members. They take control of their own divorce process with the support of their attorneys, coaches, a neutral financial advisor and other experts as needed. They are no longer at the whim or mercy of decisions made by indifferent judges and the judicial system.

Collaborative family law is designed to protect the future long-term stability of family relationships and the well-being or safety of children. Financially, it is proving to be generally less expensive than litigated divorce.

Divorce Coaching
After the divorcing couple signs a four-way agreement with their attorneys that formalizes the beginning of the collaborative divorce process, each spouse meets for one time with his/her coach. At this first meeting, the coach helps the client to identify and prioritize the client’s needs and concerns, and assess and anticipate with the client where communications problems may arise in the negotiation process. The client, with the coach’s assistance, will thus be better prepared to positively communicate his/her needs in a way that can be heard and respected by his/her spouse. This may be the only meeting with the coaches during the collaborative process - or the clients may meet again individually with their coaches and/or both clients may meet together in a four-way session with their coaches when the clients are experiencing difficulty in maintaining constructive dialogue. On an as needed basis, the coaches will work with the spouses to develop a parenting plan that safeguards the well-being of the children and the needs of parents for an equitable sharing of time spent with the children.

In collaborative family law, clients have the full support of the entire TEAM of collaborative professionals who support the goal of long-term family stability and financial and emotional well-being.
